Intergenerational wealth transfer

Help your family without putting your own future at risk.

Many parents and grandparents want to help the next generation, whether that's a home deposit now or a well-planned inheritance later. It's a generous instinct, and with some careful planning you can do it in a way that works for everyone, including you.

Questions we'll work through together

  • How much can we afford to give, and when, without compromising our own retirement?
  • Should we help now with a gift or loan, or leave it as an inheritance?
  • How would gifting affect our Age Pension entitlements?
  • How can we treat our children fairly, especially in a blended family?
  • How do we protect money we pass on if a relationship breaks down?

Your retirement comes first

It's easy to underestimate how long retirement savings need to last. Before we look at helping anyone else, I'll make sure your own plan is secure. Then we can work out what you can comfortably give, and the best time and way to do it.

Gift, loan or inheritance?

Each approach has different consequences for tax, for the Age Pension and for protecting the money once it's been passed on. I'll set out the options clearly, and where legal documents are needed, such as a loan agreement or a testamentary trust, I'll work with your lawyer to put them in place.

Bringing the family into the conversation

Money and family can be a delicate mix. Some clients find it helpful to have me in the room when they talk with their children about their plans, so everyone understands the thinking and expectations are clear. Whatever suits your family, I'm happy to help.
